We're Back!!!
We hope that the vacation has provided each of you with opportunities for new experiences and that you are returning
to us well-rested, well read, and ready to learn. If you recall, when we left school in June several significant changes were underway. The Ballard and the Evans Schools ere closed. The parameters that delineate neighborhood school were redrawn. Here at the Oaklandvale we were asked to broaden our borders to include children who previously attended Lynnhurst, Waybright, Veterans Memorial or Evans School. No one has moved out of our district but we are happy to welcome all the families who are joining us for the first time.

We are bursting with activities and initiatives. These first few weeks we will seek to iron out the rough spots- traffic, busing, lunches, etc. I look forward to meeting you all. Please stop by my office and introduce yourselves. I will be most comfortable when I recognize my parents on the playground and each of my students as they come through the door.

On behalf of the Oaklandvale School staff, I wish all our families- old and new- a healthy and productive school year.

History of our School
There are some Saugus residents who still remember the old Oaklandvale School, built in the late 1840's.  It was a two-story building, but only one room in the second floor was used. The restrooms were in the outhouse in the back with a fence separating the boys' room from the girls'. There was electricity, but no telephone or runnng water. The janitor had to bring water in milk cans, onlt to be used as drinking water. You couldn't wash your hands. Every student had their own drinking cup.

The school was heated by a potbellied stove in the center of the classroom and the children brought up wood or coal to feed the stove. The teacher would fire the stove.

There was a ledge in the cellar, which was eventually blasted away in order to put in toilets in the 1920's.

They used three rooms in the school after a new section was added on. They made an extra stairway on one side so then there were two front doors and two stairways which met at the top of the front room.

The school housed only grades 1-4

The building was torn down in the 1960's, after the new school was built

We have had great technological advances made to our school over the summer. $50,000 of the Avalon gift has been spent on 2 new dell computers in each classroom, 6 Smart Boards, a network printer for each wing, and a server for the school. The remaining money, if possible, will be combined with additional funding from the town in hopes to add a modular to our school. Overcrowding is not the issue, but space is. Stay tuned for more updates!
